A relay is an electrically controlled one Switch that turns on, off, and toggles a circuit. Inside is a coil wound around an iron core. When current flows through the coil, a magnetic field is created that attracts an armature located at the end of the coil. This connects two contact fields with each other and closes the so-called work contacts in the relay (closer).

You know relays from cars, for example. There, indicators, windshield wipers and starters are controlled via a relay.

The relay circuit offers the advantage that you can operate it from a distance - ideal for smart home systems. Relays for the smart home can also be retrofitted: You can equip conventional light switches, sockets, shutters or other electrical consumers in your home with a relay actuator and then control them via your smartphone or tablet via an app.
